Tel Aviv meets Stuttgart – Stuttgart meets Tel Aviv

What does it mean to compose in the twenty-first century – in terms of aesthetics, culture and a technical perspective? Six young composers each from the State University of Music and the Performing Arts Stuttgart and the Buchmann-Mehta School for Music at Tel Aviv University develop answers to these large questions together during their reciprocated working visits. After the visit by Israeli students as guests in Stuttgart one year ago, it is now the German students’ turn for a visit: First, these students will compose, together with their instructors, pieces that subsequently will be rehearsed at their partner school in Tel Aviv. The pieces will also be discussed collectively in classes but at the end of their visit performed for the first time. This experience is not only about scores and notes, but primarily about the different cultural backgrounds all the participants bring to the collective achievements. Ultimately the students walk away with new networks and valuable insights into different approaches to music that will have tangible effects on the work of these young artists.

The project “Tel Aviv meets Stuttgart – Stuttgart meets Tel Aviv” brings together composition students from the State University of Music and the Performing Arts Stuttgart and the Buchmann-Mehta School for Music at Tel Aviv University from 28.01 to 03.02.2012. In a one-week workshop, six students from Germany work on a composition, which will premiere at the Israeli partner university. Joint seminars and personal encounters comprise the project’s framework.
