Fellowship Year 2022: China, Israel and the Middle East

The fourth year of the Sylke Tempel Fellowship focuses on the topic "China's Influence on Israel and the Middle East".

The last decade has brought major geopolitical changes in and for the Middle East. After the so-called Arab Spring, in 2011, and the increased withdrawal of the US and Europe from the region, China has intensified its engagement in the region. However, the significance of this engagement, the impact of Chinese investments as well as (security) policy consequences have only been marginally addressed in both German and Israeli discourse, up until now. We want to change that!

Our current Fellows are therefore dedicated to questions regarding Chinese influence on Israel and the Middle East. They cast important spotlights from different angles on a topic that will shape not only the development of the Middle East, but also future foreign policy of the USA and Germany with regard to the region.
