Beyond Polarization

The Idea Behind Beyond Polarization
In times of ongoing conflict, society is becoming increasingly divided into political camps, both in Germany and in Israel. This polarization is particularly evident in the places where young people form their opinions: on social media, in schools, in vocational training institutions, and at universities. That makes opportunities for dialogue and spaces for interaction more important than ever.

With Beyond Polarization, we aim to create such a space. Because it is only through personal contact that we can truly get to know one another and understand each other’s life circumstances. Through conversation and shared experiences, we create opportunities for genuine encounters — and thus also for dealing with contradictions and different opinions.

What happens during the program?
As part of Beyond Polarization, 16 young people from Israel and Germany who are active in educational organizations will first meet in Germany and then, during the second part of the program, in Israel. The participants will visit various organizations in both countries that promote democracy and social cohesion, gain insights into the local civil society, and gain practical experience.

Following the two trips, participants will have the opportunity to carry out a mini-project of their own and thus make a direct impact in their own communities.

Through Beyond Polarization, we aim to empower young people to advocate for their democracies and to examine German and Israeli issues from different perspectives. The ability to tolerate contradictions and deal with them productively is at the heart of the program.

The program is funded by the German Federal Foreign Office.
