For decades, the former Israeli president and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Shimon Peres (1923-2016) was engaged in strengthening German-Israeli relations. In 2010, he emphasized the unique friendship between Germany and Israel before the German Bundestag. As announced by President Steinmeier in his Jerusalem speech in May 2017, the Federal Foreign Office has donated an award in memory of Shimon Peres and his work. The Federal Foreign Office awards this annual prize of twice 10,000 euros in cooperation with the German-Israeli Future Forum Foundation. The award given in memory of Shimon Peres and out of a sense of responsibility for the special friendship between our countries is bestowed upon young German and Israeli professionals and executives who have made an outstanding contribution to the shaping of German-Israeli relations.

The significance of the award was summarized by prize winner Monica Gillette after the ceremony in 2017 thusly: “The award was a welcome mandate for us to dream bigger, reach farther, find new partners and to never, ever stop trying to understand how we, and our art form, can make a difference in the lives of others.”
