Voices in the Distance – Music in the Negev and Brandenburg
In this project, those in society who are unheard and under-represented will be given a voice through a musical composition. Important issues from rural areas in both countries will be explored through music in a creative process.
In democratic societies, every vote counts equally. The project participants creatively question whether this is actually implemented in reality. They aim to give the unheard an opportunity to make themselves heard, in the literal and metaphorical sense. The people involved, such as refugees and migrants, mainly live in remote regions in Israel and Germany, and their voices are inaudible. The issues to be covered include socio-political themes, such as healthcare and environmental protection.

Three participants each from the Negev (Israel) and Brandenburg (Germany) regions
Three composers each from Israel and Germany
Three musicians each from Israel and Germany
Project content
The “Voices in the Distance” project aims to build on the musical tradition of offering a response to social and socio-political issues, of giving those who cannot be heard a platform of expression, and in so doing, to enable them to help shape social change. Unheard voices will be given an opportunity to speak through integrative, creative activities and the collaboration between professional musicians and people living in rural regions and communities from Negev and Brandenburg.
Methods used in the project
Three groups of participants will work together in this project: people living in both regions write texts or report on topics that are important to their lives. They will also record sounds and voices from their area that best reflect their relationship with their direct environment.
This material from the regions will be used as a basis for the musical interpretation of the composers. The pieces of music thus created will be performed by professional musicians in Israel and Germany.
In a bilateral process, the Israeli and German composers will collaborate with the participants and musicians from the respective other country.
Project goals
The newly composed pieces will be presented in both countries at concerts and festivals – also after the project has been completed.
