Dr. Tamara Or had the great honor of joining the President of Germany, Dr. Frank-Walter Steinmeier, on his trip to Israel. The state visit was at the invitation of the Israeli President Reuven Rivlin, whose term of office ended on July 7, 2021. The President also met with his successor Isaac Herzog and held discussions with Prime Minister Naftali Bennett and alternate Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Yair Lapid. The program also included a visit to the Holocaust memorial Yad Vashem as well as a visit to an institute for desert research in the Negev Desert. In two rounds of meetings, the President discussed future prospects of Israeli society and the challenges of Jewish-Arab coexistence. During the trip, the Federal President awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany to four important personalities who have rendered outstanding services to the German-Israeli relations: Holocaust survivor Regina Steinitz, writer David Grossman, artist Michal Rovner and the former director of the Yad Vashem memorial, Avner Shalev.
